Discovering Louhans
In the heart of Bresse Bourguignonne, near the Mepillat campsite, surrounded by 3 rivers – the Seille, Solnan and Vallière – Louhans-Châteaurenaud offers an exceptional gastronomic, architectural and historical heritage.
A medieval town with 157 arcades forming the main thoroughfare, Louhans offers a wide range of stores on both sides of the cobblestones.
At the entrance to the Grande Rue, the Maison du Bailli, the town’s oldest house, boasts a typical interior and facades. It is the only building in the town to be classified as a “Monument Historique”.
The Hôtel-Dieu with its exceptional apothecary, featuring a unique collection of Hispano-Moorish earthenware pots, is a visit not to be missed.
The “History and Culture of the Deaf” museum on the same site is just as magnificent.
At the municipal museum, you can discover the Musée de l’Imprimerie, the only one of its kind in France, and works by artists such as David and Jean Cocteau.
Nearby, the city’s former defense tower, Tour Saint-Pierre, has been converted into an exhibition space.
Don’t miss Saint-Pierre church, with its polychrome glazed tile roof, gargoyles and colorful stained glass windows.
The town is famous for its Monday morning market, which has existed since the 13ᵉ century and is one of the biggest in France. It runs from the Place du Champ de Foire to the Arcades. Crowds of onlookers and merchants fill the center. The Grande Rue, with its arcades, is closed to traffic. This is where the clothing market takes place. The squares around Saint-Pierre church are decked out in all manner of colors. It’s a pleasure to stroll through the stalls. Delicious aromas waft through the air.
Finally, the poultry market, located on the Place de la Charité and Place du Champ de Foire, attracts curious onlookers and shopkeepers for its local atmosphere. The market features a wide selection of poultry, notably Bresse poultry, but also geese, ducks, rabbits and even goats, depending on the season. An organic market is held on rue de la Grenette, while the farmers’ market is located near the Halle. A must-try is the market dish, Tête de Veau, as well as Corniottes, a local specialty. On Easter and Whitsun Mondays, the market takes place as follows: food and poultry market in the morning only, clothing market all day. So don’t wait any longer to visit Louhans from our campsite!
