Places to visit during your stay

Campsites in Saône-et-Loire are seductive because of their proximity to nature. What’s more, it’s a convenient starting point for discovering the most beautiful sites that are the pride and joy of the region.

One of the department’s must-see sites is Cluny Abbey. When founded in 910 by William the Pious, it was placed directly under the protection of Rome, giving its abbot the de facto role of mediator between the political authorities and the Pope. From the end of the 10ᵉ century onwards, it became one of the major centers of Christianity in Europe, heading up a network of some 1,400 dependencies and 10,000 monks spread across the continent. The abbey also owes its European influence in part to illustrious abbots such as Richelieu and Mazarin. But as powerful as the abbey was, it was in gradual decline. During the French Revolution, the monks were expelled from the new buildings erected from 1750 onwards, which were then put up for sale.

The village of Bibracte is another must-see in Saône-et-Loire. This peaceful town is appreciated for its authenticity and gentle way of life. Situated at the summit of Mont Beuvray, it offers a panorama of exceptional beauty. Visitors also have the chance to admire the architecture of the Musée de la civilisation celtique (Celtic civilization museum), which offers interactive exploration with a tablet, to be picked up at the start of the visit and displaying a wealth of information.

There are many towns to visit from the campsite, such as Matour and Bourbon-Lancy.

Discover the region from the campsite

Take advantage of your camping holiday to discover the beauty and richness of Saône-et-Loire. If you head to the west of the département, you’ll be able to admire the hills of the Autunois, the region around Autun, the Charollais and the Mâconnais. To the east, you can explore the northern Bresse plain. The center of the département, crossed from north to south by the Saône river, is also well worth a visit.

The region is rich and beautiful. Visitors are captivated by a mosaic of breathtaking landscapes, such as the Bresse plain, the Mâcon hills and the Jura foothills, to name but a few. It also owes its attractiveness to the renown of its gastronomy: Burgundy wines, Charolais beef, Bresse chicken and many other flavors can be tasted here. Of course, the département is also known for its rich historical heritage, with iconic sites such as Cluny, Brionnais, the Château de Pierre-de-Bresse and the magnificent Monastère de Brou. You can discover the history of these places and the dates that marked them through various visits…
